Between 1996 and 1999, Peter Beste photographed the hardcore, emo, and punk communities he was part of in Houston, Chicago, and across the American underground. Made before his later work documenting Norwegian black metal and Houston rap culture, these photographs capture a formative period of American DIY culture from the perspective of a participant rather than an outsider.
Drawn from previously unpublished negatives, If You Don’t Take a Picture Then You Won’t Have One brings together portraits, performances, road trips, living rooms, basements, and the everyday moments that existed between shows.
