Between 1996 and 1999, Peter Beste documented the hardcore, emo, and punk communities surrounding him in Houston, Chicago, and across the American underground. Made before his later work photographing Norwegian black metal and Houston rap culture, these photographs capture a formative period of DIY culture from the perspective of a participant rather than an outsider.
Drawn from previously unpublished negatives, IF YOU DON'T TAKE A PICTURE THEN YOU WON'T HAVE ONE collects portraits, performances, road trips, living rooms, basements, and the everyday moments that existed between shows.
Each copy includes an exclusive companion cassette mixtape assembled from music that shaped the era.
