TRUE NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL
Black metal in Norway developed as a self-contained cultural world—one defined by opposition to Christianity, skepticism toward modern life, and a deliberate withdrawal from mainstream society. Drawing on extreme music, pagan symbolism, regional history, and myth, the scene constructed its own visual language and internal hierarchies.
I spent six years photographing this community with sustained access. The images move away from spectacle to consider black metal as a form of identity construction and cultural continuity—shaped by environment, belief, and a persistent desire to exist outside contemporary norms.
